Pictures from Saint Joseph's Indian Normal School
Drexel Hall, which sits directly across the highway from the Saint Joe campus, was once the Saint Joseph's Indian Normal School. It was funded by St. Katherine Drexel, the principal benefactor of the early infrastructure of the College. Somebody needs to tell the people who run the website of that previous link that the building has now been renovated, and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
This school was a means of assimilating Native American children into the dominant culture. As can be seen, this did not mean the complete elimination of the students' origins. The pictures are poignant.
Thanks to Pam Brown-Seely for sending these from the SJC archives.
